Benjamin Ferreira Guimarães

On July 4, 1944, one of the most beautiful stories in Belo Horizonte is born. That was when the industrialist from Minas Gerais, Benjamin Ferreira Guimarães (1861/1948), his son, Antônio Mourão Guimarães, and the doctor, Baeta Vianna, created the Benjamin Guimarães Foundation (FBG), maintainer of Hospital da Baleia. The FBG is a private philanthropic institution, certified as of public utility in the Federal, State and Municipal spheres. Since it is not aimed at profit, all the money raised is used to pay for services, improvements in structure, service and expansion.

The Foundation follows the rules of the Public Ministry of the State of Minas Gerais (MPMG), which operates in the direct regulation of entities in the third sector. For more information, click

and learn all about the role of the MPMG in foundations and entities of personal interest.

Throughout its history, the Foundation has grown and added to its activities 3 operating segments who currently work in maintaining quality care and humanized care provided by the Hospital: philanthropy in health, teaching and research and land heritage.

Philanthropy is in the Institution's DNA, reflecting the character and principles of its founder of helping others through health. Teaching was born from the need to train new doctors to meet the demands of Orthopedics, at the time, but soon expanded to training in other medical specialties, also bringing research. And the landowning heritage has become essential to preserve the fauna and flora that surround the Hospital.

Fundador

Benjamin Ferreira Guimarães

Benjamin Ferreira Guimarães was born on December 17, 1861, in the city of Santo Antônio de São João Acima, today with the name Igaratinga. The eldest son of Manoel Ferreira Guimarães and Maria Constância Moreira, he moved to Rio de Janeiro at the age of 13 with the intention of working at the firm Xavier e Gontijo, whose owners were also miners Bernardo Xavier Rebelo and Domingos Gontijo.

At that time, Benjamin's responsibilities were all about sweeping the floor, tidying up goods, and serving customers. Even so, in the time he held this role, he proved to be a reliable and very competent employee. When his employers saw these qualities, they insisted on stimulating him. Over time, Benjamin became a salesman.

After two years of work, he decided to return to Minas Gerais, more precisely to the city of Bom Sucesso. There, he started to work as a salesman, in the trade of Joaquim Machado da Silva Neto. Benjamin's dexterity caught the attention of his boss, who, recognizing the value of his employee, offered him partnership. Thus, in 1880, the company was renamed Machado e Guimarães.

At the same time, Benjamin met Maria Ambrosina and it wasn't long before the two got married. The union was made official on December 15, 1883. During the marriage, they had twelve children, three of whom died as children and nine continued the work, history and life of this great man. According to the family of Benjamin and Maria Ambrosina, they had 65 years of a solid, happy and harmonious union.

With society thriving, Benjamin was able to save enough to start his own business. Then he created the Casa Popular de Bom Sucesso, in 1889, a trade where he sold everything and quickly achieved the success of the community.

Benjamin wanted to bet on new paths and therefore invested in the textile sector. The opportunity came when his friend Juca Fonseca invited him to join Companhia Industrial de Valença together. The inauguration took place in 1906, in the city of Valença, located in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The Company was a big industry for the time, equipped with the most sophisticated and imported machinery from England.

There, Benjamin Ferreira Guimarães' successful trajectory began to consolidate. After the great impact of this enterprise, others would appear and enter the history of this important industrialist. One of the achievements that demonstrates his entrepreneurial vision was to inaugurate river navigation in Brazil in the second half of the 1920s. With the acquisition of steam Benjamin Guimarães, which sailed the Mississippi River, USA, it was possible to take the fabrics he produced in his factories, going up the São Francisco River, leaving Pirapora (MG), to Juazeiro (BA), and from there bringing cotton, raw material for their industries.

From the beginning, helping others has always been very present in Benjamin's life. He always made it clear that accumulating money was not the end of him. So, after distributing half of his fortune among his children, he decided to take care of other “children” around the world, watching over poor children, taking care of their health and education. Benjamin developed a fair and secure system to better guarantee the continuity of the social works he supported. In view of the numerous requests he received, he asked the interested party to open a public subscription and guarantee to double the amount collected by the community. Thus, he made sure that the work would be stable, continuing to be cared for with the support and involvement of the local community.

Therefore, even before the Benjamin Guimarães Foundation, its founder already made donations to health and educational institutions for underprivileged children. Still in 1925, he built a school in Bom Sucesso and later contributed financially to the construction of countless holy houses, orphanages, schools and nursing homes in Minas and other states.

Beginning of everything

The history of the Benjamin Guimarães Foundation / Hospital da Baleia dates back to July 4, 1944. The former Fazenda do Baleia, in the forest that bears the same name, was given by Benjamin then governor of Minas Gerais, Benedito Valadares. Together with his son, Antônio Mourão Guimarães and the doctor and friend, Baeta Vianna, Benjamin made possible, through the donation of 20 million cruzeiros, the creation of the hospital that was built as part of the Minas Gerais Crusade against Tuberculosis.

The first construction, today the Antônio Mourão Unit, received up to 250 children born to tuberculous parents, who received all possible support there. Sick children were referred to the Maria Ambrosina Hospital Unit, where they received first aid.

Over time, Hospital da Baleia specialized in surgical and orthopedic care. In the 50s, it became a reference in Orthopedics in the country. Gradually, in the following decades, the hospital expanded its operations offering several medical specialties.

The institution was one of the first in Belo Horizonte to establish a partnership with the government, in 1987, and began to serve through the Unified Health System (SUS), implemented in the country the following year.

According to the director-president of FBG since 2001, Tereza da Gama Guimarães Paes, (see deletion) the characteristics that allowed Baleia this longevity are its good reputation, credibility and the ability of the institution to attract good partners to fulfill its mission of providing quality and humanized hospital care, encourage teaching, research and fulfill its social and philanthropic function.

Currently, the Hospital Complex is made up of the Maria Ambrosina, Baeta Viana, Antônio Mourão units, the Medical Center, former Antônio Chagas Diniz Unit and the Radiotherapy Center, which completes the treatment of cancer patients with state-of-the-art equipment.
